A tragic workplace accident in Carol Stream, Illinois, has claimed the life of a 55-year-old worker after part of a crane failed inside a warehouse on Tuesday.
Emergency crews from the Carol Stream Fire District responded shortly after noon to a facility on Saint Paul Boulevard. The incident occurred inside a warehouse operated by a small, family-run stainless steel company, where workers were loading heavy materials onto a truck.
According to authorities, the worker was assisting with loading a large metal spool onto a flatbed truck when a component of an overhead crane—possibly a strap—suddenly broke. This caused the massive spool, estimated to weigh around 48,000 pounds, to سقوط and strike the employee. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses nearby reported hearing a loud popping sound at the moment the equipment failed. The worker’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) arrived at the scene to begin an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. The Carol Stream Police Department and the DuPage County Coroner are also involved in the ongoing investigation.
As the community reflects on this heartbreaking loss, thoughts are with the victim’s family, friends, and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time. Further updates are expected as authorities continue their investigation.
